Recently, Jake Jasper introduced me to a material that I had never heard of before, but after one look I immediately took interest. The rough material and the extraordinary designer cabochons he fashioned from it look like a Jackson Pollock painting; a mosaic of bright and vivid color splashes, drips, and patterns.
Chrysocolla wood as it is known, is a very rare material from Turkey. It is petrified wood that contains a variety of minerals, namely chrysocolla. Over millions of years, copper bearing minerals such as chrysocolla, malachite, azurite, and cuprite replaced some of the organic material of the wood as it petrified. The resulting amalgamation is a natural work of art that, working in tandem with Mr. Jasper’s skilled hand, brings out the very best in what this distinct and unusual material has to offer.
