Mexican Cherry Fire Opal
In one of my favorite stories, The Lord of the Rings, it is stated that the One Ring was forged in the fires of Mount Doom in the Dark Land of Mordor. This superb, intense red 1.04 ct Mexican Cherry Fire Opal is so hot I like to think it was also forged in the same fires of Mount Doom!
Coming in warm fiery hues of yellow, orange, white, brown, and red, cherry opal refers to the red variety of fire opal. Of all the colors of fire opal, cherry is the most coveted and the most valuable. To see a stone with this amount of saturation and brightness is quite rare. This gem could easily be mistaken for a fine ruby! I have never seen, nor do I expect to see again a cherry opal of this color and quality. Many stones are treated to obtain a color of this degree, but this stone has received no enhancements whatsoever. This remarkable gem has exceptional clarity and is a native oval cut, meaning it was cut in Mexico, the country where it was mined.
Although deposits of fire opal have been found all over the world, the finest quality deposits have been found in Mexico where fire opal has become the national gemstone of the country. Since I have acquired this stone it has held a cherished bright spot in my personal collection. This incredible cherry opal would certainly create an extraordinary piece of jewelry and given my presumed origin of the stone, I think it would be only fitting that it was set into One Ring with which to rule them all!
