“Out damned spot! out, I say!”
This natural, 3.56 carat African garnet, entitled Diamond Eye, has excellent clarity and displays a striking dark red hue. This stone most likely belongs to the pyrope variety of garnet, which provides it with the beautiful deep red color. The Greek word, pyropos, means “fiery-red” in English, and it’s clear to see how this gem got its namesake. This blood red stone has been fashioned into a 1.5 marquis cut. This refers to the fact that it is 1.5 times as long as it is wide. Exceptionally cut with precision, Michael Rizzo was able to use his years of lapidary experience to unlock the finest color and brightness of this beautiful January birthstone. With a hardness of 7- 7.5 on the Mohs scale, this gem would lend itself perfectly to a unique cocktail ring or other custom piece of jewelry.
In one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, Lady Macbeth drives herself to madness with a guilt-ridden conscience and the thought of a drop of blood on her hands that she cannot wash away. I speculate that the drop of blood that the murderous queen could not wash off hands may have resembled this regal, diamond eye garnet.
